MSN Messenger 6.0 File Sharing & Gaming Patch

Word has spread around on certain IRC networks of a handy little trick to allow you to play Games with your contacts (only Tic Tac Toe at the time being) and additional features such as File Sharing and Decision Wheel. There are certain countries that are unable to get access to these features, so we’ll show you how you can easily get around that!

We will need to edit a file known as ConfigCache.xml, you can find this particular file in the following directory:

X:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\youremail@address\
(Where X:\ is the drive Windows is installed to. Note that “Application Data” is a hidden directory, to access it you should paste the link into the Start > Run box)

Open up Notepad or your favourite editor and open ConfigCache.xml

Edit the following line:
http://appdirectory.messenger.msn-int.com/AppDirectory/Directory.aspx?L=en-uk (de-de for our German members)

So that it appears as:
http://appdirectory.messenger.msn-int.com/AppDirectory/Directory.aspx?L=en-us

Neowin suggests changing the ExpireInDays tag at the top of the XML file from it’s value of 2 to 100+ so this fix doesn’t change in 2 days time .

Save the file, and restart your copy of MSN Messenger 6.0 Beta.

NOTE: This “hack” is no longer necessary, as MSN Messenger 6.0 FINAL has been released. Please go to the MSN Messenger website to download this file. The final version has everything unlocked and ready to use including all the games and file sharing.
