The Movie Meme
Got this from Minivan Mom, even though she left me out of the “pass it along” bit.
Total Number of films I own on DVD/Video
I have about 50 VHS movies that I haven’t touched in about four years. Need to cart those off to a Pawn Shop or something. I have about 20-30 DVD’s including both Movies and Television show collections. Also, like Minivan Mom, this does not include my “other” movie collection (DiVX/XViD).
The Last Film I Bought
Thanks to Blockbuster Video’s “Previously Viewed Movies” bin, I picked up copies of Napoleon Dynamite, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Garden State. I know that’s actually three films, but I bought them at the same time.
Five Films I Watch A Lot/Mean a Lot to Me
Garden State – I don’t know why this film moves me so much, but it does. Zach Braff wrote, starred, and directed this independent film about a man so overloaded with prescription drugs that he is completely numb emotionally. When his mother dies he returns to his home town in New Jersey and leaves his pills behind for the first time in over 15 years, and slowly starts feeling real emotion again when he reconnects with his childhood friends and meets the hyperactive cute-as-hell girl of his dreams (played lovingly by Natalie Portman). I’ve watched this film about ten times since it hit DVD and it gets better every time.
Donnie Darko (Directors Cut) – I love scary movies, but this one is a cut above the rest. Poor Donnie is a shy outcast from the rest of his late 1980′s era high school class, until one day his imaginary friend Frank (a six foot rabbit with a demonic face) starts telling him to do things. After Frank saves Donnie from having a jet engine land on him, he tells him that he has 28 days until the end of the world. This is more of a psychological thriller than a slasher gore pic, but I’ve watched it more times than I can count. The first three times were just to understand the film at all, the rest were to appreciate the things I missed before. If you’re still lost after watching this, I recommend listening to the Directors Commentary.
The Princess Bride – I think I’ve watched this film more times than any others. I doubt I need a recap, but I still run into people who have never seen this movie. Buttercup is a spoiled girl who bosses her farmhand Wesley around everyday, to which Wesley always obliges with a simple “As You Wish.” It takes the silly girl some time, but she finally realizes that he really means “I Love You,” only right before he is taken away from her by the Dread Pirate Roberts. A year later she is kidnapped by a group of rogues (Mandy Patinkin is SO awesome) and is saved by the very same Pirate who killed her Wesley. The movie is best summed up with this line: “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
The Goonies – HEYYYYYYYY YOOOOOOOOOOOU GUYYYYYYYSS! A bunch of kids try to find a lost pirate’s treasure while avoiding a trio of bad guys and their strange and deformed brother named Sloth. I remember watching this film as a child and wanting to explore the sewers for my own hidden pirate’s treasure, although I probably would have only found Hepatitus C.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – My favorite Star Wars pic, only because it has a huge cliffhanger, plot twists, and ends on such a dark note compared to the happy ending of A New Hope. I think this was the best acted and written of all the Star Wars films. It even has my favorite Han Solo line: “Laugh it up, fuzzball.” I saw this for the first time on Betamax and it was the only movie I owned for about a year.
I’m passing the baton to Diantological, Lemon Jinny, and Activists of Apathy (Only to make them post more!)
