Saturday Night Live Cast Changes

fey_and_poehler.jpgAccording to NCBuy and a few other media outlets out there, Seth Myers is filling the now vacant seat that used to occupy Tina Fey on Weekend Update, as well as becoming the lead writer for the show.

Other cast changes include the departure of Chris Parnell, Horatio Sans, and Finesse Mitchell. No new cast members were added this season.

Of all the Weekend Update anchors, only Chevy and Dennis Miller could really do it solo. Colin was terrible (and still is.. how many more mediocre shows do the networks have to cancel before they realize this?), Kevin Nealon was good to a point, but didn’t deserve the whole spotlight, and Norm was good but not written for well and severely underappreciated.

When Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon (read: not a Fallon fan) took over as a duo, it breathed life back into the flacid news sketch and gave it a new identity. Often I would sit through a terrible episode just to watch the Weekend Update sketches.

When Fallon left and Amy Poehler took his place, I was happy because Amy was finally given some decent writing (for her best work, watch Upright Citizens Brigade), and her and Tina had great onscreen chemistry. Plus that sketch where she plays the gassy chick with one leg always puts me in stiches, especially the parody of “The Swan” they did with the Olsen twins. “I just want me a sweet face tatoo”

I’m curious to see how Seth Myers will do.. he’s generally pretty funny in most of his sketches, and he can actually deliver a punchline without laughing or looking into the camera stupidly (I’m pointing at you, Fallon). For a while I thought he was on MadTV as well, but it was actually his brother (who went on to be “replacement Eric” on That 70s Show).

Wow, I just noticed how many parenthetical comments I put in this.

I hated Jimmy Fallon too, for the exact same reason. He (and Sanz) are defective, degenerate, and not my idea of good sketch comedians. Hell, Sanz wouldn’t make a good garbage man.

I agree.. When I saw him perform with UCB in New York a few years ago, he seemed the only one that didn’t have much to say the entire time. You could clearly tell he was WAY overshadowed by the other comics (most of whom were SNL writers) and struggled to keep up, but failed miserable.

    Oh, and Happy Birthday, btw.
